WalkSanDiego in partnership with the City of La Mesa, the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, and the County Health & Human Services Agency- East Region (HHSA) developed and were awarded a Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Non-Infrastructure grant entitled La Mesa Kids Walk & Roll to School by Caltrans.

 

WalkSanDiego, in collaboration with the City of La Mesa and partners will implement the program in in 6 elementary schools and 2 middle schools located in the City of La Mesa over the course of four years including provide expertise and facilitation to the SRTS Steering Committee, conduct education activities (i.e. SRTS Coalitions, safety patrol trainings, presentations, school assemblies, SRTS Workshops, walk audits, school neighborhood mapping), lead encouragement activities (i.e. National Walk to School Day, suggested SRTS maps), support enforcement activities (i.e. safety patrol training and equipment, placement of mobile speed feedback trailers, police patrolling), provide detail for needed engineering activities (i.e. request maps and traffic counts, prepare listing of walk/bike barriers reported at SRTS workshops)and conduct evaluation activities (i.e. parent survey, student tally) that align with the Federal SRTS guidelines to enable and encourage children in kindergarten through eighth grade, including children with disabilities, to safely walk and bicycle to school and to make walking and bicycling to school a more appealing mode choice.
